Luck Shines on Students as FG Gives Conditions for Reopening Schools

Finally, luck shines in favor of students, fresh men and aspirants of several Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges as the Federal Government finally state guidelines for schools to reopen across the nation. Note, this does not mean school can open with immediate alacrity. All measures must have been put to place before such move can be made at all.

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba why making this announcement said any institution making a move to reopen after putting all measures in place must ensure they do so with the consent and approval of the Federal Government.

He therefore stated the guideline to reopen institutions to include the following; 

All institutions must have hand washing facilities, body temperature checks, body disinfectants at all entry points to their major facilities including gates, hostels, classes, offices, laboratories, workshops etc. 

The whole premises of each institution must be decontaminated. Institutions must make effort to ensure proper hygiene measures are in place amidst students and staff. 

Social and physical distancing in class size and meeting spaces must be ensured. 

He made mention of the Federal Government's efforts in trying to make sure all things are in place so total ease from lockdown can be declared. While awaiting this, he urge all institutions to ensure they do not wait for FG declaration before putting their own safety measures and precautionary steps in place. 

Earlier before this annunciation was made, the Academic Staff Union of Universities stated that online learning cannot work in Nigeria. This according to the body is because Nigeria institutions lack basic facilities to put this in place and also will water down the quality and soundness of lecture presentation and contents. 

ASUU insist students have hard time concentrating and comprehending when being taught face to face, how much more when it goes virtual. Therefore in their part, reopening of schools is the only way to ensure student resume back to learning.
