Schools Should Remain on Lockdown until the Pandemic is Over — ASUU Chairman
In my last article, Luck Shines on Students as FG Gives Conditions for Reopening Schools I ended my report with questions on how schools and staff of various institution will respond to the conditions the Federal Government gave to reopen schools.

It wasn't a surprise that ASUU gave a response however, many students have anticipated they will because they have not failed in giving prompt responses to any decisions or steps the FG makes as far as education is concerned. In an earlier speech before the federal government gave the conditions for reopening, they stated why it is impossible to run academics activities online in Nigerian universities, especially those owned by the government.
When being interviewed by the Tribune Education, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi gave reasons why it is unsafe for the federal government to open schools until the pandemic is over.
He insisted that schools should not reopen until the Federal Government have put all the necessary measures in space to prevent the spread of Coronavirus amidst students and staff of different institutions. According to him, this is the only way Nigeria will not regret the decision.
He laid emphasis on the fact that schools owned and sponsored by the government have overcrowded classrooms, poor sanitary systems and no running water, among other challenges and these specifically will not make the practice of social/physical distancing and personal hygiene effective both for students and teachers.

He did not fail to mention that the rate of increase in daily cases of coronavirus in some states is quite alarming, and due to lack of enough testing facilities, not all students coming to schools from various states across the country will be tested. Hence it is possible to relate and live with asymptomatic patience without knowing one is vulnerable.
The tone of his speech made it emphatic that it is to the good of the populace, the Federal Government and the students at large that schools be left on lockdown till a permanent solution to the pandemic is found.
